Writing is a skill that anyone can learn. It's easy and a great way to express your thoughts and ideas. This writing guide will share five tips to help you write better content. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced writer, these tips will help you improve your writing skills!
Text messages
One of the best writing pieces of advice I ever received was always to take a step back and review my work before hitting the publish button. It sounds like such a simple tip, but it has made a considerable difference in the quality of my writing.
Whether writing a blog post, an email, or even a simple text message, taking a few extra minutes to proofread my work has helped me communicate my thoughts more effectively and prevent unnecessary mistakes.
Of course, this isn't always possible (or practical) when writing something off the cuff, but reviewing and editing my work is essential for anything I want to put my best foot forward. If you're not used to doing this, it can seem like a lot of extra work, but trust me - it's worth it! Your writing will be more polished and professional, but you'll also grow as a writer in the long run. So next time you write something, try following this simple tip.
Words are tools
If you're looking to improve your writing, one of the best things you can do is expand your vocabulary. Having a more extensive range of words at your disposal will allow you to be more precise and better communicate your thoughts and ideas. Here are some tips for growing your vocabulary:
- Pick one new word daily, and use it in conversation 21 times. The more you use a comment, the more likely you will remember it.
- Read as much as you can. The more exposure you have to new words, the more likely you will add them to your vocabulary.
- Look it up when you come across a word you don't know! You will learn the word's meaning and how to use it properly.
- Talk to people from different walks of life. Everyone has their way of speaking, and by listening to others, be exposed to new words and phrases.
30% Writing, 70% Editing
As any writer knows, the first draft is just the beginning. It can be tempting to hit publish as soon as you've finished writing, but editing and revising your work can make a difference. Editing is an essential part of the writing process and separates good writing from excellent writing.
If your writing is more concise, powerful, and beautiful, spend at least three hours editing every hour. Hours may seem like a lot of time, but putting your best work out there is worth it. Keep in mind that editing is a skill that takes practice, so don't get discouraged if it feels challenging at first. Instead, keep at it; your writing will grow by leaps and bounds.
Ultimately, remember that writing is about communicating your thoughts and ideas in the most effective way possible. By taking the time to edit your work, you're making sure that your readers will understand and appreciate what you have to say. So even though it may be tedious at times, editing is essential if you want to be a successful writer.
Narrative urgency
Many people believe that writing is a solitary activity. However, to be a successful writer, you must be aware of your audience and communicate your message to engage them. Communicating means that every sentence in your writing must serve a purpose. The first sentence should make the reader want to read the second. The second sentence should propel the reader to the third. So forth and so on until the very end.
If a sentence doesn't move the narrative forward—if it doesn't make the writing more urgent—it must hit the cutting-room floor, no matter how clever or precious it seems. Urgency may seem daunting, but it will become second nature with practice. And if you're ever unsure, there's always the trusty editing process to fall back on. So don't be afraid to communicate your thoughts and ideas.
